Convergent Italian destroyer development

Similarities with foreign destroyers may reflect Italian debate and observation, while wartime experience exposed the limits of Mediterranean specialisation.

Notes

Italian officers had already debated many of the ideas visible in the new class. Their similarity to foreign designs appears to reflect convergent development, perhaps informed by observation, rather than simple copying. Earlier destroyers could specialise because cruisers were expected to cover other tasks. Planners also assumed that Mediterranean conditions allowed a narrower operating role. Wartime experience showed that those assumptions did not produce the destroyer force Italy needed.
