Continental and blue-water carrier design paths

Britain, the United States, and Japan moved toward large, functionally straightforward fleet carriers, while France, Germany, and Italy pursued a different design family.

Notes

Britain, the United States, and Japan followed a different carrier path from concepts emerging in France, Germany, and Italy. Béarn, Joffre, Graf Zeppelin, and related continental projects formed a recognizable alternative family. The distinction rested on institutional experience: navies that had operated carriers extensively were moving toward large but functionally straightforward fleet carriers. Carrier designs can therefore be compared through the doctrine and operating practice behind them as well as their hull dimensions.
