Conte di Cavour and the Mediterranean production race

Conte di Cavour combined twin and triple turrets for thirteen 12-inch guns while Italy used greater output to offset the strong designs of its Mediterranean rivals.

Notes

The Conte di Cavour arrangement placed twin turrets above triple turrets and produced a thirteen-gun main battery. The class also exposes the industrial balance among Italy, France, and Austria-Hungary in their Mediterranean competition. Austria-Hungary could produce attractive designs but lacked the infrastructure to build them in comparable numbers. Italy possessed enough capacity to outproduce its regional rivals, although it still struggled to move to the heavier calibre it wanted. The unusual gun layout and national construction advantage served the same strategic race.
