Why containerized missile launchers still need difficult handling

Containers simplify packaging, but ship stability, heavy lifts, and sea conditions still constrain replacing missile modules.

Question

Could self-contained VLS containers be placed on a flat deck and swapped when empty?

Short answer

Their weight and placement affect stability, while exchanging them requires suitable lifting equipment and calm seas.

Notes

Putting self-contained missile launchers on any convenient flat deck creates top-weight and stability concerns. Recessing the modules into the ship would address their placement and resembles the STANFLEX approach. Replacing a heavy module would still require a large crane and a sufficiently calm sea. A rail system is another possibility, although it would not make the operation simple. Even the smaller Rolling Airframe Missile needs more loading support than the suggestion of sailors handling missiles by hand implies.
