Training constructors through extensive design studies

D'Eyncourt cultivated junior constructors and expanded the Royal Navy's practice of testing many paper designs before selecting a ship.

Notes

D'Eyncourt treated the Director of Naval Construction's department as both a design office and a school. He sought contact with staff at every level and used repeated theoretical studies to develop their judgment. Many alternatives stopped at tables or sketches, while others advanced to detailed plans. This large design portfolio let junior constructors practice and allowed the department to explore tradeoffs before committing public money and yard capacity.
