A construction pause kept Unicorn away from the early war

Without Churchill's capital-ship pause, a rushed Unicorn might have supplied air power at Denmark Strait or with Force Z.

Notes

Churchill's wartime pause on capital-ship construction delayed Unicorn even though Admiralty advocates nearly persuaded him to exempt her. Harland and Wolff could plausibly have accelerated a lightly protected hull if it had been the only carrier-like major ship competing for labor and fitting-out resources. A concentrated effort might have produced an operational ship in early 1941. That timing raises possible appearances at Denmark Strait or with Force Z, where roughly 18 fighters and 18 strike aircraft would have offered capabilities Prince of Wales and Repulse lacked. Survival would still have been uncertain. Henderson's death also left a less experienced Third Sea Lord to defend the project.
