Why Constellation exchanged 24-pounders for 18-pounders

Truxtun's 24-pounders promised a heavier close-range blow, but unreliability led him to replace them with 18-pounders after the action.

Notes

Before the engagement, Thomas Truxtun double-shotted Constellation's 24-pounders because he intended to close to about 50 yards. The choice promised a punishing opening broadside, and the later action shows the value of that short-range preparation. The 24-pounders nevertheless proved unreliable enough for Truxtun to remove them and fit 18-pounders after the battle. Nominal calibre and weight of fire mattered less if the weapons could not perform dependably on service.
