Conquistador strikes, then fights on

British close-range fire disabled Conquistador, but a delayed prize crew allowed Reggio to make the damaged ship re-hoist her colours.

Notes

Cornwall endured the approach before delivering her broadside at pistol range, while Stratford and Lennox concentrated on Conquistador and damaged her ability to manoeuvre. After her captain and two lieutenants were killed, Conquistador struck to Stratford. Stratford did not send a boat promptly to take possession, leaving the surrender incomplete in practical terms. Reggio exploited that gap by firing from Africa and forcing Conquistador to raise her colours again, until Cornwall and Canterbury compelled a second surrender and disputed the resulting prize claim.
