Why contemporary gun and crew counts disagree

Lloyd's List and the London Gazette give different strengths for the same captured ships, limiting how precisely the forces can be reconstructed.

Notes

The London Gazette's force list gives Junon forty guns and 500 men, while Lloyd's List gives forty-four guns and 560 men. Alceste appears with thirty-six guns in both lists, but with 300 men in the Gazette and 460 in Lloyd's. Lloyd's also reports Courageuse with forty-four guns and 500 men, well above the thirty-two-gun battery described earlier. The Gazette lists Salamine with eighteen guns and Alerte with fourteen, whereas Lloyd's gives each sixteen. These are competing contemporary reports, so their figures cannot all be treated as precise statements of strength at capture. The disagreement warrants caution about individual totals without obscuring the much larger mismatch between frigates, brigs, and ships of the line.
