Defeat did not end the Army of Tennessee's command upheaval. Bragg accused John C. Breckinridge of drunkenness and cowardice, removed him, and replaced him with Hardee. Longstreet, meanwhile, did not obey the order to rejoin Bragg after Fort Sanders and instead prolonged his operation near Knoxville. Sherman's arrival with 25,000 troops made that siege untenable and showed how victory at Chattanooga released Union strength for Knoxville.
