Could six-inch coastal batteries survive attack by capital ships?
Short answerDisperse and protect the batteries, use mines, and withdraw guns from exposure while other positions fire.
NotesSix-inch guns would need enough cover and separation to avoid being suppressed together. Mines would force the attacking ships to deal with another obstacle before approaching freely. One proposal lets a threatened battery lower its guns while another position opens fire. Machine guns and six-inch fire would oppose a landing. Without ports for heavier equipment, this remains a delaying defence against capital ships.
