Chapter ยท 6:16-18:38

A competent captain under Saint Vincent

Calder's career record shows a capable Royal Navy officer whose captaincy credentials were solid without making him an obvious fleet-command star.

Notes

Calder's record distinguishes competence at sea from exceptional admiralship. He served in the Seven Years' War, American War of Independence, French Revolutionary Wars, and Napoleonic Wars, and commanded major ships including Victory and Ville de Paris as Saint Vincent's flag captain. It took about twenty-two years of service to reach a post-ship command and nearly forty to become a rear admiral. Contemporary descriptions credited him with doing his duty well without finding an opportunity to distinguish himself, leaving open whether the habits of a reliable captain were enough for independent strategic command.
