Drone capability depends on communications and ready replacements

Communications and replacement programmes are tested against the ambition for a more drone-dependent force.

Notes

A force relying more heavily on drones needs communications capacity to support them. Reductions affecting Skynet 6 and an uncrewed surface-vessel programme are criticised as inconsistent with that ambition. Morpheus supplier problems are acknowledged, while the absence of an announced replacement remains the concern. Boxer variants and Storm Shadow stocks provide further examples of reducing capability before successors are available, with the missile replacement timetable explicitly tentative. The wider criticism is that programmes assume the promised 3.5 percent spending level is already available, then lose less visible elements when present funding proves insufficient. Britain's trade routes, data links, strategic choke points, and overseas commitments explain the consequences of that mismatch.
