The naval war amid Commonwealth political change

The war crossed the dismissal of the Rump Parliament, Cromwell's restructuring of government, and the proposed union of England and Scotland.

Notes

The First Anglo-Dutch War unfolded amid rapid constitutional change in the English Commonwealth. In 1653 the Rump Parliament was dismissed, Barebone's Parliament was summoned, and Cromwell replaced the Council of State with one of his choosing. The Tender of Union proposed placing England and Scotland under one government in April 1654 as the war ended. The first Protectorate Parliament met in September, after the peace. The naval campaign therefore crossed several domestic political arrangements rather than one stable republican system.
