Australia is broadening beyond a cruiser-centered navy, while Canada is rapidly expanding from a small destroyer force into a much larger escort service. One or two Canadian six-inch cruisers offer status but too little mass for the navy's central wartime tasks. More numerous and flexible Tribal-class destroyers and escorts better fit Canadian and wider Commonwealth needs. The government of India must likewise invest in local naval strength because the Royal Navy is already committed in the Atlantic, Arctic, and Mediterranean and cannot cover every regional requirement alone.
