Commonwealth burden-sharing and the Singapore bastion

Britain's weak postwar economy and reliance on Commonwealth forces helped move its principal Far Eastern base from insecure Hong Kong to Singapore.

Notes

Britain's postwar economic weakness reduced its Far Eastern naval presence and increased dependence on India, Australia, and New Zealand. The China Station was scaled down as unrest in China made Hong Kong look insecure as the main regional base. Singapore took its place, with a new dockyard and fortifications completed in 1938. Churchill's phrase "Gibraltar of the East" captures the intended role: a concentrated imperial bastion built from scarce defense resources.
