Commonwealth battleship preservation needed willing hosts

Dispersing retired British battleships as Commonwealth museum ships is attractive in hindsight, but no government or institution wanted responsibility for them at the time.

Question

Could retired Royal Navy battleships have been preserved as museum ships across the Commonwealth?

Short answer

It would have been valuable, but no Commonwealth host wanted the ships when preservation decisions actually had to be made.

Notes

Preserving ships such as Renown, Queen Elizabeth, Valiant, and Warspite across Britain and the Dominions would have been valuable, but there were no willing takers when disposal decisions were made. The Australian omission is especially striking because its institutions preserved so much other military material. The Australian War Memorial's exceptionally broad collection of First World War artillery provides a useful comparison. A ship survives when a contemporary institution accepts the cost and responsibility, regardless of the historical reputation it acquires later.
