The scheme placed officers on a common foundation at Osborne, Dartmouth, and sea before they chose gunnery, torpedo, navigation, signals, engineering, or Marine work. Cadets entered at twelve or thirteen, trained through the midshipman and sub-lieutenant stages, and normally specialized around lieutenant rank. Specialists could retain deep expertise, while officers returning to general duties by commander or captain would bring that specialist knowledge into whole-ship leadership. Engineering officers could also elect to remain specialists for the rest of their careers, so common entry did not require a single uniform career path.
