Why commerce raiders should avoid even weaker warships

Königsberg outclassed HMS Pegasus, yet damage from the fight still compromised the German cruiser's raiding mission and drove her into the Rufiji Delta.

Notes

Königsberg shows why a surface raider could not afford an unnecessary fight with another warship. HMS Pegasus belonged to the older Pearl class, whose design dated from 1897 and drew on an 1889 predecessor, while Königsberg was a newer and much stronger light cruiser. The engagement nevertheless damaged Königsberg's machinery, and components had to travel overland to Dar es Salaam for repair. A tactical victory helped leave the raider immobile and blockaded in the Rufiji Delta.
