Layered defence supports the use of sea communications

The mutually supporting layers of air defence protect a force whose maritime purpose is to use sea communications.

Notes

Layered air defence is expected to remain a requirement even as the individual systems change. Its outer defences and successive inner layers protect the core of a force. That core can include the assets providing the outer defensive layer, so the elements depend on one another. Maritime command similarly concerns the ability to use sea communications while denying useful access to an opponent. Corbett's distinction is between controlling those communications and treating the sea as territory to hold.
