Why a veteran officer became a cadet again

The new Imperial Japanese Navy reset former clan officers into a common training system so wartime precedence would not obstruct national integration.

Notes

Tōgō went from serving as a third officer in battle to entering the Imperial Japanese naval school as a cadet. The reset reduced the precedence that officers from victorious or defeated clans might otherwise have claimed. It was part of the wider attempt to turn former clan forces into national institutions. Tōgō's earlier artillery experience with army leaders also gave him a personal basis for the combined operations that came later.
