Combat-system diversity creates dilemmas

The case for complementary combat systems concerns an opponent's ability to concentrate countermeasure research on one radar and command-system family.

Notes

Aegis and SPY receive strong praise in the case for developing complementary radar and command systems. The concern is that universal use of one family would give an opponent a single technical target for countermeasures. Even a difficult system can receive concentrated study when there are no alternatives to prepare against. Several complementary systems would complicate that specialization. DragonFire and other national radar and weapons work provide examples of development that could contribute to this approach.
