Colony frigates adapted British escorts to American production

The similarly named Colony-class frigates show how Lend-Lease translated a British escort concept into American machinery and weapons.

Notes

Trinidad's modern namesake is Trinidad and Tobago, and the search for HMS Tobago leads to the similarly named Colony-class frigates. These ships were American-built Tacoma-class patrol frigates derived from the British River-class concept and transferred to the Royal Navy under Lend-Lease. Their American boilers, turbines, guns, and anti-submarine equipment avoided the inefficiency of shipping British systems across the Atlantic. At roughly 1,264 long tons, 20 knots, and a complement of 190, they were configured around anti-aircraft and anti-submarine convoy work instead of cruiser duties. All twenty-one completed ships survived wartime service, a useful measure of the escort design's practical success. Several later entered Argentine and Egyptian service, including Tobago's use as a Suez Canal blockship. The shared operational concept remained intact while machinery and weapons changed to suit the builder's industrial base.
