Chapter · 0:01-2:16

Cold War theory and the memory of world war

The opening frames Cold War sea power through Mahan, Corbett, Hughes, Gorshkov, and the institutional lessons fleets carried from the Second World War.

Notes

Cold War sea power can be approached through a chain of theorists. Mahan and Corbett remained reference points, while Wayne Hughes captured much of the period's concern with fleet tactics and combat practice. Admiral Sergei Gorshkov supplies the Soviet view of naval power in war and peace, and later writers such as James Cable address how the strategic setting evolved. The unifying problem is how fleets tried to preserve institutional knowledge bought through the Second World War while adapting it to a nuclear and bipolar age.
