Chapter · 31:27-33:29

Cold War service and the Gulf of Sidra engagements

From the evacuation of Saigon to the 1981 Gulf of Sidra kills, the Tomcat's early service shows the tension between long-range capability and strict target identification.

Notes

The first operational squadrons, VF-1 Wolfpack and VF-2 Bounty Hunters, deployed aboard USS Enterprise and helped cover the American withdrawal from Saigon. In the Gulf of Sidra, F-14s from VF-41 Black Aces defeated two Libyan Su-22 Fitters after evading an attack and closing for visually confirmed Sidewinder shots. The episode illustrates a recurring Cold War constraint: powerful fleet fighters still had to distinguish hostile aircraft from Soviet reconnaissance platforms whose destruction might trigger escalation. A Tu-95 Bear could be gathering information for a future raid, yet shooting it down during routine probing risked a much wider confrontation. Rules of engagement could therefore prevent crews from exploiting maximum missile range even when the aircraft possessed it.
