Design studies versus ships the Royal Navy actually built

Royal Navy paper studies could train designers or influence procurement decisions without becoming serious construction proposals.

Notes

British Cold War destroyer history includes many concept and paper studies that were never serious construction candidates. Naval architects used some to exercise their design skills, while the Third Sea Lord's office commissioned others to discredit a rival proposal or steer the Board toward a preferred option. A polished drawing could serve an institutional or political argument without representing a funded programme. Unbuilt designs therefore need to be assessed for how seriously the Navy considered constructing them.
