Nimitz enters Cold War crisis management

Operation Eagle Claw, Middle East deployments, and the 1981 Gulf of Sidra incident show carriers managing crises below general war.

Notes

Nimitz entered service after Vietnam but immediately joined the Cold War system for containing regional crises without allowing them to escalate between nuclear blocs. In a bipolar order, the danger that a small conflict could grow into nuclear exchange pushed both alliance systems to restrain members and manage incidents carefully. Her support for Operation Eagle Claw in 1980 and the 1981 clash in which Nimitz-based F-14s shot down Libyan aircraft illustrate both reach and risk. Freedom-of-navigation operations and successive carrier reliefs made the class a persistent instrument of Western conflict management.
