Cold War amphibious ships were designed around acceptable risk

Invincible protected northern anti-submarine operations, while Ocean was expected to rush troops to Norway under much greater risk.

Notes

The ships embodied different wartime jobs and loss assumptions. Before the Falklands War, Invincible combined anti-submarine work with interception of Soviet maritime-patrol aircraft, while the postwar adaptation placed greater weight on air defense and traded the Sea Dart system for more aviation space. Invincible protected forward anti-submarine barriers and forces reinforcing Norway, so preserving the carrier mattered to the wider campaign. Ocean was expected to rush troops north, unload quickly, and face a high probability of being hit or sunk. Her lighter, partly commercial standard accepted that risk while keeping the more valuable Invincible-class carriers available for fleet air and anti-submarine tasks.
