Codrington's Trafalgar record explains his aggressive confidence

Commanding HMS Orion, Codrington arrived from the rear division and pursued successive enemy ships rather than easing into the battle.

Notes

HMS Orion took roughly two hours to reach the action from the rear of the northern division at Trafalgar. Once engaged, Codrington concentrated on the French Swiftsure and forced her surrender. He then attempted to attack Principe de Asturias before turning on and capturing Intrepide. The sequence helps explain why the Navarino commander trusted decisive close action and was comfortable exercising initiative inside a confused fleet battle.
