Cockatoo Island's repair skills supported strategic independence

Fabrication capacity and trained workers mattered even when Cockatoo Island could not fully dry-dock a battlecruiser.

Notes

Australia did not need to dry-dock an entire battlecruiser at Cockatoo Island for the yard to matter. A substantial shipbuilding and fabrication facility could still support complex repairs alongside, provided trained workers were available to remove and install machinery. Fuel and stocked spare parts could not substitute for those skills. This maintenance capacity was a prerequisite for operating an advanced fleet with meaningful strategic independence.
