Submarine warfare extended far beyond two famous campaigns

The Atlantic U-boat war and the American Pacific campaign can obscure British, Italian, and Japanese submarine operations across several other theatres.

Notes

Popular accounts often reduce Second World War submarine history to German U-boats in the Atlantic and American boats in the Pacific. British submarines also fought in the Atlantic, North Sea, Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, and Pacific. Italian and Japanese boats operated across several of those waters as well, with different navies emphasizing different designs and missions. Anti-submarine requirements depended on the theatre and enemy submarine force, not on one universal Atlantic model.
