Chapter ยท 18:47-19:29

Coastal castles as control and deterrence

A castle's visible strength deterred rebellion by forcing opponents to ask whether they could overwhelm it before reinforcements arrived.

Notes

A castle gives its holder control and a way to influence events in the surrounding territory. Its walls also create a highly visible deterrent. Potential attackers must judge whether they can assemble and apply enough force quickly enough to capture the site. If they cannot, the castle buys time for supplies and reinforcements to reverse the numerical balance. The fortification can discourage or delay action before an assault ever reaches the walls.
