Two small battleships against one larger opponent

A pair of heavily armed small ships can force a larger battleship to divide its attention while both fire at one target.

Notes

Small coastal battleships with heavy guns could still demand a full-size battleship as an opponent. A pair creates a tactical complication because both can concentrate on the same larger ship. The larger ship must cover two targets while preserving the benefits of its own concentrated battery. The preference in this comparison remains with the full-size battleship, but the smaller ships make the engagement more demanding than a tonnage comparison alone suggests.
