Would coastal batteries take part in the Channel battle?
Short answerInitially, perhaps, but smoke and the intermingled fleets would soon make target identification too unreliable for them to continue safely.
NotesCoastal batteries would probably attempt to engage the German force. Their usefulness would fall sharply once dozens of ships began firing at close range and smoke obscured the Channel. Gunners ashore would struggle to distinguish British hulls from German targets inside the melee. Fixed defenses could not turn this confused fleet action into a controlled crossfire.
