Sea Dart and Sea Wolf still need a last-ditch defence

Duffy asks what protects a high-value warship after a saturation attack overwhelms its medium-range and point-defence missiles.

Notes

Duffy identifies sea-skimming anti-ship missiles launched by aircraft or surface ships as a specific threat to modern warships. Sea Dart provided medium-range defence and Sea Wolf point defence, but a saturation attack might overwhelm either or both. He asks what close-in layer would then give an expensive target a final chance to survive. Goalkeeper, Phalanx, and Sea Guard are named as systems NATO navies were considering for that role. The question treats layered defence as a sequence in which failure at longer range must not leave the ship unprotected.
