Clemsons entered reserve before returning to global service

Mason's brief initial service and later transfer as HMS Broadwater contrast with the recollection of Simpson's long active career.

Notes

No Clemson-class ship commissioned before the Armistice, and most entered service in 1919 or 1920. USS Mason commissioned on 20 February 1920, decommissioned on 31 March 1922, and recommissioned on 4 December 1939 before transfer to the Royal Navy as HMS Broadwater. Long periods in reserve meant that such transfers could provide comparatively little-used hulls. USS Simpson is recalled as an exception with extensive active service through the interwar years, including China-station work and later convoy duties. The recollection hesitates over its subsequent transport or auxiliary classification. The contrast is between ships reactivated after years in storage and those with longer continuous careers.
