What is your opinion of Patrick Cleburne's leadership qualities in the Army of Tennessee?
Short answerCleburne could perform exceptionally when circumstances suited him, but he became too entangled in the Army of Tennessee's destructive command politics.
NotesBattlefield talent did not guarantee effectiveness inside a dysfunctional institution. Cleburne could rise impressively to an operational challenge, as his stand at Ringgold Gap demonstrated. He remained vulnerable to the political feuding that consumed much of the Army of Tennessee's senior leadership. His situational excellence did not free him from the army's institutional failures.
