Clearing an age-of-sail warship for action

Preparing a ship of the line for battle meant dismantling living spaces as well as running out the guns.

Question

Were a ship of the line's guns always left at their ports, or moved to make room for daily life?

Short answer

They could be moved or secured for daily use, then run out after removable cabins and partitions were cleared for action.

Notes

Some guns remained secured near their ports during ordinary shipboard life, while crews moved others to make space. Preparing for battle also meant dismantling the removable walls around officers' accommodation. HMS Victory provides an example of these false partitions. Crews took the walls down, stowed clothing and other possessions in the lower parts of the ship, and positioned the guns for action.
