The soldiers behind the Montecuccoli-class names

The cruisers commemorate Raimondo Montecuccoli, a Habsburg general, and Muzio Attendolo, a condottiero who founded the Sforza dynasty.

Notes

Raimondo Montecuccoli was an Italian-born professional soldier who served the Habsburg monarchy across the Thirty Years' War, the Second Northern War, an Austro-Turkish war, and the Dutch War's Rhineland campaign. He is described as a controlled battlefield commander associated with linear infantry tactics, resistance to Ottoman expansion, and the Order of the Golden Fleece. His maxim that war requires money, money, and money links military effectiveness with finance as well as tactics. Muzio Attendolo was a successful condottiero who led Bolognese-Florentine forces and founded the Sforza dynasty. His family later ruled Milan, and the Sforza name was associated with strength.
