Which books are a good starting point for Ottoman history?
Short answerClaire Norton's work, including The Renaissance and the Ottoman World (2013), is the recommended starting point.
NotesClaire Norton's work offers a starting point for Renaissance-Ottoman relations and Ottoman siege history. The Renaissance and the Ottoman World is an edited volume published by Ashgate in 2013. A further Routledge publication from 2017 concerns Ottoman siege history. Alex Clarke's recommendation draws on being taught by Norton at St Mary's University, Twickenham, and on her willingness to discuss disagreement in class.
