Why civilian defenders were not militarily helpless

The label civilian can conceal veterans, local knowledge, skilled trades, physical labour, and household leadership that become valuable in a defense.

Notes

Official records can make civilian participation look less formidable than it was. As an analogy, many British Home Guard members had survived the First World War and would defend terrain they knew intimately. In earlier societies, butchers were practised with blades, while carpenters, miners, and farmers brought strength and experience with demanding tools. Women performed much of the same agricultural and household labour and could not be separated from the community's survival. A lord's wife might also administer an estate in his absence, making female management part of ordinary elite life instead of an exceptional wartime improvisation. Civilian status should not be mistaken for lack of skill, experience, organization, or motive.
