One unit is recalled as having former sergeant majors serving as corporals and other NCOs, with retired generals among its officers. Its location is given tentatively as somewhere in Dorset near an old garrison. The example is used to show why Home Guard rank alone could conceal considerable previous experience. The unit's identity remains unspecified, so the anecdote should not be treated as a documented description of the whole organisation.
