The Fulton speech and the advance text given to journalists

An account of omitted paragraphs illustrates how a speech could force journalists to revise reports prepared in advance.

Notes

The account says that the advance press text omitted the Iron Curtain passage. Journalists who had prepared their reports from that text then had to respond to material delivered in the speech itself. Some missed the unexpected passage and reconstructed it afterwards from notes taken during the speech. This is interpreted as a deliberate way to prevent the advance script from determining the coverage. A later clarification puts the uncertain number of withheld paragraphs between one and several. The episode is presented as an example of Churchill's handling of the press.
