Epping, Woodford and Churchill's electoral base

The constituency discussion examines Churchill's durable majority and the pressure of changing local populations.

Notes

Churchill represented Epping from 1924 to 1945 and Woodford from 1945 to 1964. Woodford emerged from the division of the constituency he had previously represented. Housing growth and changing boundaries form part of the explanation of later constituency changes. His vote is described as generally around 60 to 70 percent, with 62.96 percent given for 1951. The Labour candidate's 34.39 percent and Communist candidate's 1.34 percent illustrate the distribution in that example. No Liberal stood in that contest, and the account describes the former Liberal vote as dividing roughly equally between Labour and the Conservatives. The discussion ends with his retirement at 89 and death the following year.
