Crocodile demonstrations reveal the effect of clinging flame fuel

Andrew Wilson and Ernie Cox describe learning what the Churchill Crocodile could do to bunkers and trenches during closely guarded demonstrations.

Notes

Andrew Wilson recalled being excluded from information about his unit's exercises until he learned of its Crocodile role and signed the Official Secrets Act. The demonstration showed flame spreading across a concrete pillbox and searching its openings. The trailer held 400 gallons of fuel, and the flame could reach about 90 yards. Ernie Cox remembered demonstrations in which burning fuel travelled around the corners of zigzag trenches. Fuel splashed onto his boot and continued burning despite attempts to shake it off, forcing him to wipe it onto the grass.
