Chios squanders Macedonia's strategic sea power

Philip V spends years building a fleet, then risks it in an unnecessary battle and loses the sea power that could have constrained Roman intervention.

Notes

Philip V was successful in several parts of his reign, but handled naval power poorly at Chios. Macedonia had invested years in creating both army and fleet strength. Philip did not need to fight there to continue advancing his objectives, yet he exposed the less experienced service to decisive battle. Destroying that investment left Macedonia with little naval role in the Second Macedonian War and made Roman involvement much harder to contest.
