The strategic trade-off of overseas naval bases

Overseas Chinese naval bases could complicate a conflict at first, but their supply lines would become a vulnerability if isolated.

Question

Would Chinese naval bases outside the China seas be a major problem in war?

Short answer

They would complicate the opening phase, but distant bases become a weakness if their forces can be tracked, attacked, and cut off from supply.

Notes

An overseas base has peacetime political value and a wartime logistical burden. Before a conflict, the base helps China sustain presence, build relationships, and cultivate partners outside its home seas. Once fighting begins, however, the distant force must be tracked, supplied, defended, and kept connected to China. If an opponent destroys or isolates that force, the same base that complicated the opening phase becomes an exposed dependency.
