Chapter · 38:32-39:36

A failed rendezvous and barter on the Chilean coast

A prearranged meeting point helped separated ships search for one another while the crew obtained food and assembled a carried boat.

Notes

The fleet had agreed to wait thirty days near 46 degrees south if storms separated the ships. Adams's vessel waited twenty-eight days at the meeting latitude. Local inhabitants were initially wary because of their experience with the Spaniards, but exchanged sheep and potatoes for bells and knives. The crew also assembled a pinnace that had been carried aboard in four sections. With no reunion, the ship moved on toward Valdivia, where strong winds prevented entry.
