Chile's geography made sea power a domestic necessity. Moving people and troops along a long, narrow, mountainous country depended heavily on access to the coast. A limited overland route network made coastal shipping an internal line of communication as well as a connection to foreign trade. Naval weakness could prevent Chile from reinforcing threatened regions inside its own borders. Command of nearby waters supported national cohesion, operational mobility, and defence rather than serving as a prestige purchase.
