Chidori's ocean-going torpedo-boat design compresses the armament of a small destroyer into a hull whose standard displacement is given here as 544 tons. Three five-inch guns and two twin 21-inch torpedo mounts share the ship with eight torpedoes in all and depth charges. The enclosed gun positions provide protection against splinters, gas and weather, a limited degree of protection behind the objection to calling them turrets. Two water-tube boilers and two impulse turbines provide a stated 11,000 shaft horsepower and 30 knots. The cruising range is given as 3,000 nautical miles at 14 knots. This combination of weapons and machinery depends on retaining sufficient stability in a very small hull.
